Myanmar, officially named as Union of Myanmar, is formerly known by the world as Burma or the golden land. Despite the modern world and globalization, Myanmar people have been able to preserve their unique lifestyles and heritage. . Though various national races speak different dialects, Burmese is the major language of the country.

Myanmar shares a land border across the Mekong river to the north west, however foreigners are not permitted to cross the border. The best way is to cross into Thailand at Huay Xai, and then take a short bus ride up to the Mae Sai border with Myanmar. Alternatively take a flight through Bangkok or Chiang Mai.


Yangon, Mandalay, Bagan, Shan state, and Kachin state are the main destinations for visitors.


Yangon, the previous capital of Myanmar is the biggest and most populated city, a major port and trading centre, and home to a diverse blend of cultures, customs and people.


Mandalay, the second most populous is situated in central Myanmar. Mandalay is only about hour's flight from Yangon. The road trip from Yangon to Mandalay takes about 12 hours by express coach, and about 14 hours by train. Pyin-Oo-Lwin, a popular resort town and a former British hill-station, is about an hours drive from Mandalay. The charming peaceful town is over 1000 metres above sea-level, which means the cool climate adds to this town's popularity with tourists.


Bagan, located on the eastern bank of the famous Ayeyarwaddy River, is the main tourist attraction in Myanmar and it is one of the richest archaeological sites in Asia. Bagan covers an area of 42 sq.km containing over 2000 well-preserved pagodas and temples of the 11th- 13th century. There is a double-decker steamer ship service between Mandalay and Bagan, and a luxury cruise called the 'Road to Mandalay' - the most unforgettable for tourist.

Shan State

Shan State is the biggest with the largest population and lies in the eastern part of the country, bordered by the People's Republic of China to the north and east, Lao People's Democratic Republic to the east, Thailand to the south. The Inlay Lake region is an area with an interesting lifestyle, and the people in the region live in houses built on the edge of the lake. Along with Inlay Lake,Taunggyi, Inlay, Kalaw and Pindaya Caves are the main tourist attraction of Shan state. Kachin State is situated in the northern part of Myanmar. It shares borders with the People's Republic of China to the north and east. Putao is the northernmost town in Myanmar, surrounded by snow capped mountains and spectacular wilderness.


Myanmar is surrounded by five neighboring countries but it is not a land-locked country as its west and south regions open into the Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean, and the southern to the Andaman Sea. Myanmar has ten major unspoiled beach areas and the western seaboard is open to visitors for eight months of a year, from October to May.
