A short journey north of Luang Prabang can take you to Pak Ou Caves. You can hire canoes to go along the river, or more popularly take a minibus along the winding roads, enjoying the beautiful scenery. If you take the bus after stopping at a number of viewpoints, you'll arrive at the bank of the river Mekong, at a little market the opposite side of the river to the caves.

Cross the river using one of the longtail boats, and the main entrance to the cave is just above the water line. Once inside you will be amazed by the large collection of Buddha images - in fact Pak Ou cave is better known as 'Buddha Cave'. Buddhist travellers have for many years made pilgrimages to the site in order to leave an image of Buddha, now they are placed everywhere you look.

There is a second cave higher up the rock face to explore, but once you've finished cross back across the river to the minibus. The tour doesn't end there, as the driver will next take you to a snake whiskey village. The potent local spirit is distilled in front of you in the village, with the highlight being the snake inserted into the bottle at the finish. If you are brave you can try the whiskey, and of course buy a bottle, to take back for drinking, or display.
