Patuxai Victory Monument
In the style of the Arc De Triomphe in Paris, the Patuxai (or Patuxay) stands proudly in the center of Vientiane. While its history is chequered with controversy, the Laotian version of the Victory Gate stands resolutely for all visitors to admire.

The Gate remembers those who struggled for independence from France - hence its ironic appearance in the style of the Arc De Triomphe. While bearing some resemblance to the Arc de Triomphe, the Patuxai is adorned with traditional Laotian features, with many Kinnari (Half Woman, Half Bird) figures carved on it.

The building of the gate was unwittingly funded by the US. Funds donated for building a new airport were redirected towards the monument. The arc is now a popular tourist attraction, and well worth a visit, although visitors might perhaps frown upon the incomplete nature of the monument, sceptically commenting on mismanagement and misgovernance. Eitherway, it is well worth a visit, and the view from the top is worth the very affordable entrance fee.
